Equipment Scrolling Guide
Master the art of enhancing your equipment with scrolls in MapleStory Classic World
Overview
Scrolling is one of the most important mechanics in MapleStory Classic World for improving your equipment. By applying upgrade scrolls to weapons, armor, and accessories, you can significantly increase your character's stats and combat effectiveness. However, scrolling comes with risks - failed scrolls can destroy your precious equipment or consume valuable upgrade slots.
This comprehensive guide will teach you everything you need to know about scrolling, from understanding scroll types and success rates to advanced strategies for maximizing your equipment's potential.
Understanding Scrolls
Scroll Success Rates
100% Scrolls
Never fail, but provide minimal stat bonuses. Best for securing basic upgrades without risk.
70% Scrolls
Safe choice with decent stat gains. Recommended for most players and valuable equipment.
30% Scrolls
Higher risk, higher reward. Better stats than 70% but significant failure chance.
10% Scrolls
Best possible stat gains but very high failure rate. Use with extreme caution and protection.
Dark Scrolls (5%)
Extreme stat bonuses with 95% failure rate. Can destroy equipment on failure. Only for the brave!
⚠️ Important: Scroll Mechanics
- Failed scrolls consume upgrade slots - Each equipment has limited slots (usually 7-10)
- Some scrolls can destroy equipment - Dark scrolls and certain special scrolls
- Slots cannot be recovered - Once used, a slot is gone forever (unless using Clean Slate Scroll)
- Scroll order matters - Apply scrolls strategically from safest to riskiest
Scroll Types by Equipment
⚔️ Weapon Scrolls
- Attack Scrolls: Increase weapon attack
- Magic Attack Scrolls: For mage weapons
- Accuracy Scrolls: Improve hit rate
- Two-Handed Scrolls: Specific to 2H weapons
🛡️ Armor Scrolls
- HP Scrolls: Increase maximum HP
- Defense Scrolls: Increase weapon/magic defense
- Stat Scrolls: STR, DEX, INT, LUK bonuses
- Specific Scrolls: Top, bottom, overall, etc.
💍 Accessory Scrolls
- Earring INT: For mage earrings
- Glove Attack: Critical for attack classes
- Cape Scrolls: DEX, INT, or stat bonuses
- Belt/Ring Scrolls: Various stat bonuses
✨ Special Scrolls
- White Scroll: Prevents boom on failure
- Clean Slate: Restores failed slots (3%)
- Chaos Scroll: Random stat changes
- Shield Scrolls: Unique to shields
Protection Items
White Scroll
The most important protection item in the game. Apply a White Scroll to equipment before scrolling to prevent destruction on failure. The White Scroll will be consumed instead of the item being destroyed.
Pro Tip: Always use White Scrolls when attempting 10% or Dark scrolls on valuable equipment!
Clean Slate Scroll (3%)
Extremely rare and valuable scroll that can restore a failed upgrade slot. Has only 3% success rate but doesn't destroy equipment on failure. Can turn a "ruined" item back into something usable.
Value Note: Clean Slate Scrolls are incredibly expensive. Only worth using on end-game equipment!
Vega's Spell (30%)
Special spell that gives a 30% success rate bonus to your next scroll. For example, a 10% scroll becomes 40%, and a 70% scroll becomes 100%. Stacks with other bonuses.
Strategy: Use Vega's Spell on 10% scrolls to make them 40% - better odds while keeping high stat gains!
Scrolling Strategies
Conservative Strategy (Recommended for Beginners)
- Start with 100% scrolls - Get guaranteed basic stats first
- Use 70% scrolls next - Safe and reliable upgrades
- Save last 2-3 slots - Don't use all slots immediately
- Avoid 10% and Dark scrolls - Too risky for learning
- Result: Consistent, reliable equipment with minimal risk
Aggressive Strategy (For Wealthy Players)
- Apply White Scroll first - Protect from destruction
- Use 10% or 30% scrolls - Go for maximum stats
- Accept failures - Budget for multiple attempts
- Save Clean Slates - Option to recover slots later
- Result: God-tier equipment if successful, but very expensive
Balanced Strategy (Best Value)
- Mix scroll types - Start with 70%, end with 30%
- First 5 slots: 70% - Build solid foundation
- Last 3 slots: 30% or 10% - Take calculated risks
- Use White Scroll on last slot only - Protect final attempt
- Result: Above-average equipment with manageable risk
Common Mistakes to Avoid
❌ Scrolling Without Protection
Never use Dark scrolls or risky scrolls on valuable equipment without White Scroll protection. One failure can destroy hundreds of millions of mesos worth of gear.
❌ Using All Slots Immediately
Keep 2-3 slots open for future upgrades or better scrolls. Once all slots are used, you can't improve the item further (except with extremely rare Clean Slates).
❌ Wrong Scroll Type
Double-check you're using the right scroll! Using a "Scroll for Two-Handed Axe for ATT" on a sword won't work. Read scroll descriptions carefully.
❌ Scrolling Wrong Stats
Warriors need STR, Bowmen need DEX, Mages need INT. Don't waste slots on irrelevant stats. Research your class's optimal scroll priorities first!
❌ Not Calculating Costs
10% scrolls have a 90% failure rate. Budget for multiple attempts. If you can only afford one scroll, stick with safer options.
Scroll Priority by Class
⚔️ Warriors
- Weapon: Attack scrolls (highest priority)
- Gloves: Work Attack scrolls
- Helm/Overall/Bottom: HP scrolls for survivability
- Shield: Defense scrolls
- Cape/Accessories: STR scrolls
✨ Mages
- Weapon: Magic Attack scrolls (highest priority)
- Gloves: Magic Attack scrolls
- Earrings: INT scrolls
- Helm/Overall: INT scrolls
- Cape/Accessories: INT or Magic Defense
🏹 Bowmen
- Bow/Crossbow: Attack scrolls (highest priority)
- Gloves: Attack scrolls
- Armor: DEX scrolls
- Cape: DEX scrolls
- Accessories: DEX or Accuracy
🗡️ Thieves
- Claw/Dagger: Attack scrolls (highest priority)
- Gloves: Attack scrolls for damage
- Overall: DEX or LUK scrolls
- Cape: LUK scrolls
- Accessories: LUK for critical rate
🦾 Pirates
- Weapon: Attack scrolls (highest priority)
- Gloves: Attack scrolls
- Armor: STR scrolls (Brawler) or DEX (Gunslinger)
- Cape/Accessories: STR or DEX based on build
- Special: HP scrolls for Brawlers
Advanced Scrolling Tips
💎 Perfect Scrolling
A "perfect" item means all scroll attempts succeeded. For example, a weapon with 7 slots successfully scrolled 7/7 times. These are extremely valuable and rare, especially with 10% scrolls.
📊 Expected Value Calculation
Calculate if scrolling is worth it: (Success Rate × Stat Gain × Item Value) vs (Failure Rate × Scroll Cost × Number of Attempts). Sometimes buying pre-scrolled equipment is more economical!
🎯 Slot Management
Leave your last 2-3 slots empty for future content updates. New, better scrolls may be released, and you want slots available to use them.
💰 Scroll Speculation
Scroll prices fluctuate. Buy scrolls during events when they're common, save them, and use or sell later when prices rise. This is especially true for 10% and 30% scrolls.
🔄 Boom vs Reset Strategy
For some equipment, it's cheaper to let it boom and buy a new clean one than to use White Scrolls. Calculate the cost difference before committing to expensive protection items.
